Encouragement
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
This quote is often attributed to John Wesley, but its origins remain uncertain. I recently re-discovered this quote and it inspired me to do all the good I can, etc. In that spirit, here are three new free weekly offerings in three online spaces.

Personal Stuff: Reading, Of Course!
I’ve been reading some good fiction lately that I want to share with you:
The Scent of Water by Elizabeth Goudge: Set in a charming English village in the post WWII era, Mary Lindsay returns to a place she’d visited only once as a child. Her cousin has left her a home called The Laurels and Mary leaves her London life to restore the house and live in it.
She meets and befriends many of her neighbors and finds healing in this peaceful place. I thought it might have that too-sweet, simplified feel that some books like this have, but it didn’t; real, unfiltered life was portrayed which made the story rich and satisfying. I savored it from beginning to end.
Silas Marner by George Eliot: I never read this book till now! What a beautiful tale of love, betrayal, redemption, and restoration. Set in the countryside of Middle England during the 19th century, I was caught by how human nature is the same no matter the time period.
I truly was captivated by the story of the weaver of Raveloe who, after so much misfortune and ill-treatment at the hands of others, adopts an orphan girl and learns to love again. I listened to the recording and loved it. Everyone else is reading Middlemarch these days, and please do if you haven’t! But this novel is most definitely worth the read and is nowhere near as long.
The Marlow Murder Club (and Book #2, Death Comes to Marlow) by Robert Thorogood: If you like British cozy mysteries with an older woman as the protagonist, this series is for you! Judith Potts is in her early seventies. She’s inquisitive, smart, and gets to the bottom of things.
When her neighbor dies in suspicious circumstances, Judith is unconvinced that it was an accident and investigates. She also ropes in a local dog walker and the vicar’s wife to help. This unlikely trio become friends and solve cases together. Such fun!
Have a lovely weekend,
Kim
